Anti-Adoption

Adoption Umbrella Concept Map

January 15, 2008 · 7 Comments

I have something that I have been holding onto for over a week, Sang-Shil sent it to me, she MADE it for me after our discussion / s about adoption and its umbrella and we’ve been having this ongoing talk about it. Shes really opened up my heart and eyes to avenues I don’t know about it, as have others, and this is a great way to help me visualize everything we’ve been talking about.

Over on Sandras Blog as well, we’ve discussed how many different “worlds” of adoption there are and how important it is to be able to define those inconversation because valid points that need to be addressed in order for massive reform and correction to happen can get lost in the conflict of speaking about different types of adoption. Yes there are parallels too!!

So Sang-Shil made out the above map, THANK YOU THANK YOU Sang-Shil!!!
I’m posting this up because I want everyones opinion on what else needs to go in here, what should be changed, what am I missing out on and just give your insight please. There is so much to be included for us to address, and then correct, to lead towards reform. If anyone is willing, join us and add your insight to get all of the categories, areas, and understanding we need.

This is huge for me and Sang-Shil thank you so much for what you’ve got me going on. I’ve had to really put it in the back of my mind all week, but it kept smacking me in the back of my head and finally I have the time to focus back on this again!!!

I’m such a visual person, and this is really going to help me categorize areas I know about, can address the reform that needs to happen, and learn about the areas I don’t know about.

moocho coolo. just downloaded, will print and digest. i saw some stuff right away.

this looks like mind map stuff I do at work. or and ishigawa diagram (fishbone).

like where would you put physical relinquishment when mom signs over in a hospital, to an ageny worker, who then takes child to foster care, and then child goes to family? Maybe you need a handed off to agency?

will come back and comment more later. off to print and review while I watch mind numbing television

This is very interesting. One thing I noticed… I’ve heard a few people recently who adopt, not just to have more children, but to get a child of a particular gender. I don’t know what level of specificity you are looking for.

I want to think more about this, but it looks incredibly helpful to me. Thanks for sharing this.

Hi Gersh – Here are my comments:

In addition to race differences – ethnic and religious differences – e.g. I’m 1/2 Russian-Jewish 1/2 Irish Catholic and was raised by a Russian-Jewish a-family. Everybody involved was born in the US – so it’s not an “international” adoption but has some of the same “hidden roots” issues.

First parents (and intake agencies)sometimes insist that a-parents be matched for ethnic background and religion. e.g. the child must be raised Catholic but are given to non-Catholics.

Special needs – sometimes the aparents aren’t told the child has or may have speical needs. Medical history, history of abuse, etc.

Relinquishment/lack of support – could be lack of support from the mother’s partner e.g. child conceived in adultery or from a previous relationship and is not welcomed by the mother’s current partner.

Method of relinquishment – unwed mother’s home, taken to agency, handed off to attorneys or other non-social worker parties.

Infertility – also perceived infertility or difficult pregnancies.

You’re going to need a bigger sheet of paper ;o)

guh. behind. i do intend to give you comments. should I email to you or post here?

one quick thought is that another reason for mothers relinquishment is religion. pressure from church, belief in god, going to hell, etc.

but yeah, will spend more time reviewing.

hey guys!! This is awesome feedback, Sang-Shil also gave me the program link so I’ve downloaded it and in about a week, i’m going to edit this up and add in the insight here, thank you so much!!

Suz, you can email me anytime! OR you can post it here, whatever you think is best…. :) …. are YOU questions on SofA? I saw questions signed as Suz last night, if you are I AM SO BEHIND I HAD NO IDEA!!

Romany that feedback is GREAT!! As is yours Phil THANK YOU!! tHANK YOU!!

I’m really just looking to try and encompass every possible angle of adoption, ( i know huge mission right? ) and all that adoption brings with it, so that I can sit down and literally write down the reforms needed and set up some system for working on legislation based on the concept map and where it points to needed areas of reform, which…is going to be in most places if not all.

I will really help me learn more about the areas i don’t know about, clearly i need adoptive parents to tell me about their process, and nobody is better than mothers reflecting their process…

I think this could help with NIARA and could help with targeting legislation and it will also help me understand where others are coming from in dialouging about adoption.

Besides that, i think it looks really cool.
